17:3375631had a rare foray down the london road today in order to get some stuff for my computer, there are 2 shops near the cherry tree that offer excellent service and an extensive range of parts.
i did not take notes so all that comes here is not 100% accurate just my opinion based on memory.
the road is in a worst state than when i last went down there more than a year ago, it seemed like more shops were empty than filled. the road itself is a race track, drivers sprint away from the lights at the "eagle" down to the set at the "cherry tree/kingfisher" that are usually red, no change there.
the high spots seemed to be a bakers with a nice range of cakes, a chemist and a minimarket. everything else looked like the landlords did not give a monkeys. the houses opposite the doctor's surgery had a load of "to let" signs, surely one would have to be forced to live in them if the state of the exterior is anything to go by.
there were a few high spots, a hairdressers had opened and looked inviting, also a bright and cheerful shop at the front of the charlton centre that was selling "ex catalogue" stuff(looked like mainly childrens stuff).
the whole area needs a good steam clean to get rid of the grime left by the relentless traffic.
i wish jeanette and colleagues at the l.r.c.f. the very best of luck in trying to improve things, it certainly needs and injection of funding.

19:4875668Howard - a second hand furniture shop has just opened near to the Eagle, the houses opposite the Doctors surgeries are technically on the High Street as London road starts by the Eagle. Those flats are a perennial problem on the whole being let to unsocial (sorry social) tenants, who generally seem to do the merry go round of places where landlords are prepared to let to social tenants, often visited by the boys in blue because of alleged drug dealing etc.

19:5475670i remember the furniture shop now ross, looked like they had made an effort to make it attractive, wasn't sure when then london road finished and the high street took over.
is the bail hostel still there?
used to be handily placed dead opposite an off licence.

19:5975671Spotted that this morning Ross:-
Yes Howard, it's still there and we still get the drinking club sitting on the wall of the Methodist (sorry, Beacon) Church.
Not really certain about the colour of the new pizza shop, next door to the old one!
Terry
ps I think you mean Suite World Howard in the old bank building.

20:1375673no terry,i was referring to the second hand shop, hadn't realised it had just opened today.
you have reminded me of the beacon centre with the two empty shops next to it.
that would invite our alfresco drinkers, so depressing.
my sympathy is with the town house dwellers opposite who try to put up a fight of keeping their properties in a reasonable state of repair surrounded by houses owned by dodgy landlords.

10:4875857Whilst on the subject of London Road perhaps I should mention the LRCF is meeting tonight from 7.30 at the Red Lion in Charlrton Green. If you want to hear about the progress being made or have any suggestions to make please come along and join us.
It's also worth mentioning that the AGM is next month so if anyone is considering joining the committee then tonight is a good time to see what you might be letting yourself in for.
