we are always told to lower our carbon footprint whatever that is by buying stuff grown locally.
not as easy as you would think, strawberries were very early this year but every time i went shopping they came from abroad and when the u.k. stuff hit the shelves most was from the midlands.
lately i have developed a taste for blueberries, these always came from france.
i assumed that they needed a lot of sun and were probably grown down.by the mediterranian, not so.
today in morrisons i bought some that were grown in poland.

Blueberries are also grown in the UK and can sometimes be found in supermarkets.
Last week we went to the Pick your Own farm just behind the closed down Felderland Farm shop and picked some wonderful cherries and new season's Discovery apples. They also had for sale locally grown apricots - highly recommended!
Talking of local produce the Hythe Bay Fish Restaurant in Dover serves the wonderful ice cream produced in Kent near Ashford by Simply Ice Cream. Much better than the Swiss stuff sold by another establishment close by!
The tiny grocers shop in River is fab and sources locally and often has a surprise or two!

There is a lot of locally grown stuff available if you look for it. At present we are growing chard, tomatoes, beetroot, courgettes, parsley, marjoram, etc. in our garden, and very useful and tasty they are too.
Also we have two blueberry plants in large pots, and have had some fruit off them this year as well as last. Lots of local strawberries available and other veg in Sandwich.
It is good to see local licensees using as much local produce as they can find, ie. Crispin at Worth, and Plough & Harrow here at Tilmanstone.
At our one-hour village market twice a month, villagers can bring their surplus to sell, ie. raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, etc. etc. as well as home made cakes, jams and preserves.
Yes, Bern, the grocers shop near River Village Hall is excellent, Katy has a lovely selection of stuff. and is always very helpful.

trouble is that none of the outlets mentioned above are in dover town.
i would imagine that more local stuff is available in outlying areas but there should be more avaiable in the centres of population.
we do not have a greengrocers in dover town anymore.
Isn't that shameful? In a time when the state is quite rightly promoting healthy lifestyles Dover has no greengrocer in the centre of town. I need to point out the lovely little farm shop on Cherry Tree, though.

I have heard very good reports of the Cherrytree greengrocer. I believe he sells cakes as well, he bought some cake stands and covers from us.

or
