I have just read the following from East Kent Mercury, Sandwich Mercury and Dover Mercury (it was on FB) I can only guess some have questioned the papers' neutrality.....

    "Message from the editor:

Since it was announced that Dover Harbour Board intended to use material dredged from the Goodwin Sands for its Western Docks Revival project, the Mercury has covered extensively what has become a hugely controversial subject, dedicating a large amount of column inches and space on our website.
As with many sensitive local issues, we commit ourselves to impartial reporting and try to reflect both sides. If there is a subject we believe we need to take sides on, such as a local campaign on health issues, development or transport, we will set our position out clearly so there is no doubt where we stand.
    This is not one them.
We believe there are strong and passionately held views on both sides that both need airing. We feel it is our responsibility to set out the facts, convey the various arguments and allow our readers to make up their own minds. We feel we have an important role to play by keeping people informed and by being a forum for debate and discussion from readers who have made up their minds, but also from those seeking answers.
We are not engaged in any agenda with either "camp" and are definitely not driven by any commercial considerations. There is an old adage in newspapers that if you are accused of bias by both sides, you are probably getting the balance just about right.
We will continue to cover this vitally important subject through to its conclusion and will strive to do so with integrity and honest reporting without favour. We suspect we will still receive criticisms over our coverage but accept that this goes with the territory.
    Bob Bounds"
