  Not wishing to seem to be a permanent critic, but isn't this the same company that eventually left the merchant marine and stopped using Merchant Navy qualified staff on their ships ?
  I'm sure I remember strikes, 'scab' labour and all sorts of ill will in and around Dover in the late eighties.

  Well before my time so don't know the full SP but I was told that many striking P & O staff were sacked and John (later Lord) Prescott would get them reinstated if a Labour Government came to pass - this was reneged upon.
  
  Incidentally DFDS have a much bigger and more successful apprenticeship scheme.

  There are numerous local employers across the district that run successful apprenticeship schemes - I know of one that has taken on 12 apprentices all of whom look like they will qualify in 5 months time, another firm that takes on 2-3 apprentices every year and another in Ashford that due to the success of their apprenticeship scheme is seriously considering doubling it in size (from 12 to 24 apprentices)

  FWIW I've been round East Kent College a couple of times and was really impressed with their facilities especially with apprenticeship training.
  
  Realistically anyone who is a qualified chippie, brickie, sparks or plumber has set themselves up for a well paid job for life, especially now London, where the serious money is, is easily commutable.
