Following on from the 'Jobs I wouldn't do' thread I am amazed that no one from DDC or Tesco has thought it would be a good thing to remove all the plastic bags degrading in the hedgerows along the A2 - just by their premises! The impression this gives of the town is shameful and is not confined to the A2 as Whitfield Hill, the A256 and A258 are equally polluted.
The 'Broken Windows Theory' would seem to operate here as the litter is accumulating year on year.

Had to go to Canterbury and back this morning and to avoid boredom a different route was used coming and going and the roadside litter has to be seen to be believed. Regular car users are probably immune to it now but we look like a third world country judging by the state of the roadside verges. We live in the garden of England and lambs were visible if you looked past the rubbish but what overseas visitors think when they arrive and see our countryside on their way to a tourist hot spot has to be wondered at. None of this includes the roads mentioned in the original post other hen Whitfield Hill.

I lived in Suffolk for a couple of years where roadside litter was the exception in towns and countryside. One of the first things I noticed on my return was the amount of litter and rubbish everywhere which is even worse now than on my return. For some reason it now seems the norm for some to believe it is fine to chuck their rubbish anywhere rather than dispose of it in the appropriate place or container.
Not having been abroad for years is there the same problem on European roads where there is a high volume of traffic?

No problem around here Jan. I have never seen any litter on the A28 or any other roads in my area of France. We were shocked at the state of the A2 when we recently visited Canterbury. Looks like everyone has dumped their dustbins along it and the streets and pavements weren't much better - litter-strewn and overrun with weeds. A very sad sight.

We have been hearing that every so often inside lanes of dual carriageways are coned off while council staff/contractors attempt to clear some of the rubbish. How about this being done by people on community service? 3 way result in my view.
a) Suitable punishment for minor offences.
b) It might give a sense of satisfaction of a job done to many who have not had a job before.
c) Because of resulting delays drivers particularly truckers might think again about their filthy habits especially the latter who in many cases do not get paid until the job is done.

Volunteer litter pickers Paul and Augusta Pearson have collected 529 bags of rubbish in Dover in five months during their near-daily rounds of the town.
If I were them I'd drop it off outside the front door of the Council offices!
I do think there should be a lot more bins around the town.
