A sign of the times. Business rates and greedy freeholders are the main reason. Rateable value of the Golden Lion is £16,750. Owned by Admiral Taverns, one of the greediest pubcos (who went bust in 2009 and have been owned by Lloyds Bank from then until a year ago when they were sold to Cerberus, an American private equity group) it is no longer viable as a pub under pubco ownership. Bought at auction for the £120,000 the freehold is worth, a private owner-occupier might just be able to eke a living out of it as a free house but with a Wetherspoons within 3 minutes walk, I doubt it.
