new figures show that in the last year kent county council issued 810,000 fines totalling £450,000 for late return of books and dvd's.
out of 7.7 million items borrowed 10% were returned late.
fines for books alone netted k.c.c. £.225,000 with a further £.100,000 outstanding.
the current level of fine is 15 pence a day for books and 50 pence for d.v.d.'s

I am currently £1.08 in the red. [Even though I can search the catalogue, order and renew books online.]
Still, the fact that Libraries are a nice little earner might save them from the axe.
