locally the take up of retail units is higher than the national average and certainly much higher than the rest of East Kent.
We know that the number of shops will continue to fall because of online shopping and micro pubs and other new ideas will arrest the decline in some places, already doing the trick here. A lot of what remains will probably go to be houses/flats.

the online argument is starting to wear thin. higher than the rest of east kent?? very few empty shops in Canterbury or Deal.

A better comparison would be with Margate, Ramsgate or even affluent Folkestone.

If Deal had as long a shopping area as Dover I bet they would have a similar number of empty ones as Dover.

At the risk of repeating myself, there are a lot of shops in Deal that are only open for a few hours a week. Some of them never seem to be open. They may look better than an empty shop, but are effectively the same.

Jan - Deal high street stretches a long way towards the north end and has a lot of shops off the high street. I would suspect it has just as much retail space as dover if not more. Some of the indie shops close early on certain days but I guess they must still be doing good business otherwise they would have shut.
