I've received this letter from Veolia about our drought situation. I do wonder if they are living in the U.K. though.

    Dear Councillor

    DROUGHT IN OUR AREA

We are working closely with other water companies in the south east and with the Environment Agency and the Consumer Council for Water to promote the conservation of water during the current drought. We would like to keep you informed of latest developments and attached is a PDF of a Water Resources Update which outlines the current position. The Update highlights the steps being taken to conserve scarce resources and gives details of the current restrictions on use. In addition to covering the immediate issues raised by drought the Update also looks at some of the vital long term planning work that is being undertaken on a regional basis.

Our rainfall for the past two years has been far below average and this led to Defra formally announcing a drought in the south east. In fact this has been the driest two year period since 1900 and it is a real challenge for us to manage the demand for water with only very limited local resources. All our water comes from chalk and gravel aquifers and needs to be managed carefully to ensure a secure supply. The metering of our area is nearly completed and the introduction of universal metering has led to significant water saving, particularly at times of peak demand. We are taking every opportunity to thank our customers for the way in which they have saved water and assure them that it has made a real contribution to achieving a long term sustainable water supply.

We will, of course, continue to keep you informed on the water position over the spring and summer. I hope you find the Update helpful and if you would like any further background please let me know. Additional information about us is available on the company website www.veoliawater.co.uk/southeast.

    Yours sincerely

    Head of Operations
