The post you are reporting:
I was wondering when the EH submission would become public. I note that they do not object to the hotel and conference centre and would help develop that in an advisory capacity. They propose no means or method of saving these amazing fortifications from deterioration though. Perhaps EH members should lobby the organisation and try to force it to look after the heritage that it owns on the Western Heights properly. WHPS does a great job, but their work will not save this area and keep it accessible for tourists, neither do they have the funding required to refurbish the Drop Redoubt to a standard where it can be a tourist attraction.
I am not seeing any meaningful campaign going on from the anti-developers to save the heights and their heritage for us, for the nation or for future generations.
The question must surely be;
How do we preserve the Heights and their Heritage from the ravages of time as a significant ancient monument which has the capacity and access required to allow visitors to come and enjoy it, learn from it and contribute to its continued preservation?
CGI have come up with one answer that they think delivers profit for them and preserves most of the heritage for the nation in return.
If one is against the CGI plans (in whole or in part), then surely it is necessary to come up with a different answer to the same question?
I'm up to my a***e in alligators at the moment, so don't have a different answer myself, but there is a great deal of interest, and many interested parties, in this subject. All posters, bar one, on this thread so far seem to share a common final objective for the Heights - that the Built Heritage should be preserved/restored/saved for the nation and for future generations to visit and enjoy - With such a strong objection to most of the CGI plans lodged by EH, perhaps they should be called to account and explain why they have so long neglected this SAM and lay out a clear, timetabled, costed and financed plan for its restoration and opening (no doubt for the summer only) to the public.
