When collecting the signatures, did you only state the housing (plus hotel and conference centre) plans or did you all take the time to explain the possible benefits to the Drop Redoubt? Also, when talking about the houses in Farthingloe did you include mention of the pub/restaurant, the retirement homes or the country club also included in the plans?
Simply stopping people in the street who are out shopping, possible distracted by children and/or friends, and just asking them to sign a petition against housing will only ever give a small part of the picture and produce a very biased set of figures. The same was done with the hospital "consultation" in which respondents were offered Ashford, Margate or "a mid-town site" as possible locations. Rather than write in Buckland Hospital, most will have taken the easier route and ticked mid-town which then justified looking at the Maison Dieu Road option. The £2million "hospital" has never been more than a clinic (not the actual hospital with A&E and beds that Dover needs) and their last meeting went into great detail on the "savings" by not having a maternity unit.
From the wording of this petition I would say you have a lot of signatures from people that might be against housing alone but who could then be persuaded otherwise when informed of what else is involved.
