    Hi Paul

Have been away seeing my grandchild. The sad thing is that due to the lack of good prospects in our area many of our children, on leaving University, move elsewhere. What else is of interest is that the places where they move to are managing to keep their identity - and not just by the activities of 'old folk'.

Dover is in danger of becoming a 'bedroom town' particularly if the Western Heights/ Farthingloe/ Whitfield developments go ahead. These, in the US, are places where people sleep and keep their possessions but there is no community spirit.

Albeit, the question you raise is the proposed memorial project on Western Heights. Over this, I have mixed feelings - more to do with where it is sited/format etc. - so I am not totally opposed. Regarding 'format', having a daughter who served in Bosnia, Iraq etc., if it goes ahead, I trust it will be extended to include all the conflicts since the end of WWII and Korea. As an historian, I trust that personnel who were once stationed on Western Heights will be included.

As I have stated many times, it is housing I am totally against - once one house is build then the precedence is set for more and there is little in the planning laws - as they stand - that can be done about it.

Of note, I have had an e-mail from Mike Dawson - DDC Planning boss, who has confirmed that the affordable housing policy would apply and also that the usual approach would be not to create enclaves of affordable housing but blend it in the location under discussion

Finally I am concerned about the sweeteners for the Drop Redoubt - if the housing and hotel are given the go ahead. The sweeteners should be up front. Lack of finance on behalf of CGI is, in my opinion, merely an excuse. It would appear that at least one backer is mega-rich.

    Lorraine
