Let's talk about UKIP
UKIP is dominating the political headlines. The Tories are tearing themselves apart over them and
Labour seem undecided as to how to react - and all the time UKIP are adding councillors to their
column and members to their ranks.
Initially launched to campaign for Britain to pull out of the European Union, UKIP is increasingly adopting
an aggressively anti-immigrant tone. The party has been whipping up scare stories about the impact
of immigration on Britain and, as its poster comparing the fate of the British to that of the Native American
Indian illustrates, depicts an apocalyptic future for white Britons that would be more at home in a far right leaflet.
And, just in the last few days, several UKIP councillors, including members of the Executive Council, have
been exposed for racist and offensive outbursts. What does this say about the party as a whole?
UKIP now has 205 county and borough councillors and the party could well come first in next year's
European Elections. This will only increase the temptation for mainstream parties to swing to the right
on immigration, integration and race.So what, if anything, should HOPE not hate do? I think we have five options:
UKIP is a major right-wing nationalist threat and so we should campaign against them;
UKIP's threat is cultural and so we should offer local communities an alternative vision of Britain
