  Dover needs faster broadband
  
  'Make Kent Quicker' aims to provide superfast broadband access by 2015 to 90% of homes and businesses in Kent and for everyone to have access to a service of at least 2mb. Faster broadband will have huge benefits for people and businesses in Dover, its economy and regeneration. Please see attached flyer for your information.

  Kent County Council and the Government are investing over £20m to help make this happen but to achieve our ambitions we need broadband providers to invest in Kent too. And to do this we need to demonstrate there is a big demand.
  
  Please vote now for faster broadband as the greater the demand, the more broadband providers will be prepared to invest in your local area.

  Faster broadband or no, news still travels faster than you think. The good folk here have been on to this for a few day now.

  Nigel, can you explain why there has been an apparent shift by KCC from the previous situation?
  
  This was a focus on supplying broadband to rural areas that were unlikely to get private suppliers to cover them due to the higher startup costs and lower returns, but the current campaign seems to have switched to improving the speed in the towns where there are already private suppliers.
  
  Us rural folk who have poor broadband because of our distance from the exchange and getting our broadband on copper telephone wires fear we are going to loose out yet again in favour of the towns where there is already a decent service available.

  This project is seeking to ensure that 90% of properties in Kent and Medwaybenefit from superfast broadband and the remaining 10% have access to a service of at least 2Mbutd/s. The 10% are the hardest to reach properties.
  
  There is still work being done for rural areas although, believe it or not, even the BB speed down here in central Dover is not good probably due to the canyon effect of the terrain.

  2 mega 'buts' is an awful lot of buts.

  That's understood Nigel, but doesn't explain the shift from the previous priority on rural areas with a superslow service and no option of an optical cable service from a private supplier like Virgin as in most towns.
