Ian does it not date back to long before the first world war, because the drum is a military symbol, being used as men went into battle and it always carries the battle honours on it of the regiment. By laying them on their side and building an alter and standards are layed across them, the drums are silent and religious respect can be given.
By the way I was at both the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday and took part in the ceremony at the Cenotaph on Sunday both very moving.
