Paul S, regards your post 301, the Channel Tunnel has been mentioned by me in my representations to the DfT to be included in the Port Toll revenue system, which would benefit Shepway as much as the Port of Dover would benefit Dover District. As stated many times, such a Toll is intended as the equivalent of a road toll, but with revenues being shared between the Treasury and local communities.

This is important in order to enable localism on an economic scale, and considering the approximately 40% reduction in Council budgets that is being implemented over a four year period starting from 2011, it is possibly something that makes sense to Government legislators.

Such a decision on the part of the Government would herald the beginning of local economic revival, starting with communities who have a commercial port or the equivalent (for example Channel Tunnel).
However, it's important to recognise that this would equally enable these communities - be they towns, districts or cities - to financially contribute to the development of their commercial ports. as the revenues involved would be sufficiently substantial for this to be possible.

There is to date no indication that this proposal has been turned down by the Government.
