YOU DECIDE AT NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUMS
Local residents are invited to come along and vote for their favourite community projects at the next meeting of the Dover Town Neighbourhood Forum on Friday 15 October at St Mary's Parish Hall, Dover from 6pm.
This year the Dover District Neighbourhood Forums are piloting Participatory Budgeting. This is an innovative way of allocating funding that directly involves local people in recommending how the Small Community Capital Projects grant fund is awarded in their area, and a total of around £16,500 is available for the Dover Town Neighbourhood Forum.
Invited local groups, who have applied and been found eligible, will give a three minute presentation on their project. A summary of the applications being considered will be available on the DDC website. Residents will be able to vote electronically on the day on how they score each project, and the top scoring projects will be recommended for funding. All recommendations are then subject to approval by KCC and DDC Cabinets.
This is an open meeting and all residents are welcome. Doors open at 5.30pm with light refreshments and an opportunity to meet your local County, District and Town Councillors, and other Forum members.
Kent County Council is also holding a further event (same day and venue) for the groups applying to the KCC Local Schemes Grant funds. These applications will also be recommended through Participatory Budgeting, and this event will start at 8pm.

08:4174473Worth noting about the new venue. St Mary's Parish hall. Normally these events are held at Maison Dieu House but this time its in the hall next to the central church and the Stembrook carpark, for easy access.
Its a bit different this time, unusual agenda if you like, but could be interesting. There are two meetings in one as well.
'Participatory Budgeting' trips off the tongue doesnt it?
but its better than it initially sounds!!

09:2774479I have attended two such forums over the last two Saturdays, Dover North Steve Manion Local Schemes Grant, Deal & Walmer Julie Rook and Kit Smith 'You decide' event, on behalf of Kent Miners Festival.
They are very well run and a good idea for local people to have their say in which projects they want to fund, it also has the affect of getting people to take part and to take an interest in their community. Couple of points against, in my opinion, voting age limit two young, 11 yrs, caused problems with voting (none or tactical voting). And people using handicapped and disabled children to grab the sympathy vote. These kids did not want to stand up in front of strangers and read prepared statements, two even said the were frightened.

17:3874677I agree completely, Gary. Well run but children of 11 too young to vote for local issues.

18:0974685i don't like the idea of children being comandeered into adult issues.
getting back to paulb's comment on "participatory budgeting", can anything be more designed to frighten off the ordinary resident?
our local "priory forum" are doing a presentation in order to gain funds, it could be that they are more professional in their approach, leaving someone not privvy to all the posh chatter walking away with nothing.

07:0974950Just to remind people again about this event, which is certainly different. Am reminded of it by the new story on our frontpage about the Dover War Memorial Project and their grant from The Lottery which will now enable them to carry on their good work.
So these fundings certainly help for the overall and greater good. The London Road Community are going for a grant at this event.. as I understand it, so good luck to them. Also too are Terry Cleaver's Radio guys...

10:0674966Going off on a bit of a tangent: one hidden agenda that makes me angry is the use of education as a political tool. It is absolutely true that people with less or less formal education are at a disadvantage in the wider world, especially when competing for funding/business/services. The right words matter, and the ability to read a situation and interpret information matters.
I feel passionately that education should be free and is a right for everyone regardless of social factors. This doesn't mean I think we should all walk around with degrees and PHds: qualifications are a different and seperate matter. But education to any level is a human right and the open door to freedom and liberty. To have a government deliberately dismantling any bridge towards that aim is abhorrent and I have lost any respect and support I may have had for our government as the result of their meddling and fiddling with our education system. It had already taken a battering from the previous inept crowd which appalled me even more because of their allegedly socialist (and by implication therefore more liberal regarding education) and needed a real overhaul to make it more effective. But to so clearly hug the power that education bestows to the bosom of those who can afford it, to so blatantly deter many who would need encouragement to consider further education, to so self-righteously use the excuse of the recession to lever in measures that will in effect limit the real education to those who already have a measure of power is beyond the pale and wholly unforgivable.

10:0774967Thanks Paul for the mention.
There are certainly a lot more people involved than myself though

Our new chairman Albert Thorp shall also be down there and we have a stand we are due to erect in the hall. We shall be getting there at 7pm to set up so if anyone wants to come and find out more they can. Also if you can help with the stand it will be much appreciated - you can email us on
info@dovercommunityradio.co.uk and if anyone would like to support us with the bid we would love to see you.
Yes Dover Community Radio are applying for a Local Schemes Grant which will be in the second round of presentations from 8pm.
Good luck to all involved, I hope it is a good night for all. Thank you to everyone once again for all your support. If anyone is interested in getting involved we have a meeting at 7pm on October 25th (Monday) at the Phoenix Social and Railway Club, Crabble Road, Dover (I am hoping one of the next meetings can be back at the White Horse as well).
Also if anyone wants to find out more, or get involved please drop us an email on the email above. Thanks again and good luck to all tommorrow.

10:2775191Howard,
In part you are right, beware the professional outfit, being involved with this over the last 2 yrs, The pro's ,stand out and although their cause is worthy, they are very greedy and beginning to expose themselves.
However, the system works if you take enough supporters with you, or not. Because everyone has to vote and give at least 1 point, if they don't vote, then that cause is given 5 points. If you only take 5 people and another takes 10, they will obviously give 5 points to themselves but if they like yours then that's 15 people voting for you. If it's a good cause people will vote for it.

18:5775238sounds like the money was spread fairly evenly over the causes, doubt if this will happen again next year.
