I wonder how many really check hygiene ratings before deciding to eat as those with low ratings tend to hide their green card away from easy gaze. Cinnamon Island always seems to have a low score but still seems to be popular.

The problem with the scheme is the ratings are all a bit meaningless, if there is a risk to public health it would be closed until its fixed, the fact that it is given a low rating but allowed to continue trading gives no indication of what the faults are.
I and many friends have regularly eaten at cinnamon island and never been ill, to me that's the best indicator for any eatery.

Quite often it is the paperwork that as it is not up to scratch causes a down grading, which to me is a completely different thing from hygene.

Unless they say why the rating has been given, it's hard to know what the issue is. You only find out if the owners get taken to court on hygiene grounds.

I think these ratings are no longer a guide to eating places, Cinnamon Island always seems to get a poor rating but I have yet to hear of anyone getting food poisoning from there but hear good things about them.
As Lew says the public should know why the poor rating is given.

Cullins was forced to close for a couple of days after the inspection to resolve the problems. That done they were then able to re-open, unfortunately the rating stands though it no longer reflects the situation. It really is a badly flawed system.

It is a shame, my wife was booked there for Saturday, but they changed when they read that!

Friends ate there last week and they said everything was up to its usual high standard, the system of ratings really can do serious damage to an establishment's reputation.

I was surprised to see La Scala at 1 previously 4 I think. It is one of my favourite places to go. I looked at the report and the actual hygiene was good but the inspector reported he had no confidence that standards would be maintained in future. It seems to me that recent inspections must be working to different criteria and maybe the restaurants weren't fully prepared for this.

I eat at La Scala and Cullins fairly regularly, have never had a problem and I'm not sure what the Inspector sees that I don't. They are probably two of our top five best eating establishments in town. Thinking about it I'd rather not know the detail!

I've only ever used the one in town and certainly looked up to standard to me, didn't go much on the food though.
