Took my last "Cruise Ship" organised (National Trust) walk for a group from St Margarets to Dover. With a 1900hrs sailing time this evening gave time for them to visit the Museum etc. Group to-day all Americans/Canadians WANTING to spend in town. Just completed before the rain started.
When at Terminal this morning (0745hrs) many were already making their way by foot and bus to town.
Dover does benefit when it is a ship "calling" as passengers want shore excursions. Those ships that start and finish here in Dover drive down and park their cars and drive away again, so rather like the ferries become transient to Dover, some of course stay one night before departure and our hoteliers I am sure have had a good season.
On average this season for those ships that I have seen arrive and arrange shore excursions between 25 and 35 coaches take them to London/Canterbury and other Kent destinations. So on average well over 50% of passengers are not visiting Dover. However we must look at the near 50% that do stay here and ensure they have an enjoyable experience.
It would be nice to brighten up these passengers experience from The Cruise Terminal to the Town with some flower baskets etc. There used to be some but I suspect have been the result of budget cuts.
