Costa Pacifica with a gross tonnage of 114,147 just edges Carnival Splendor at 113,300gt to become the largest cruise ship to visit Dover. They are near sisters as they both belong to the Concordia class which comprises several Costa vessels, and the Carnival Splendor as a one-off, since both companies are part of the Carnival Corporation. There are detail differences including the trademark funnels.
Carnival Splendor had quite a welcome in Dover as she was on her maiden voyage and was christened here by Myleene Klass with various activities being staged along the seafront. She had a fire in a generator room whilst off the Mexican coast last year and was without power for three days, eventually being towed into San Diego. Conditions were pretty dire onboard, with no air conditioning or other services, and rations were flown in from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.
