To be fair to new leader Ed...it is very hard to make an exciting speech at a conference. As they said on the TV there, the great art of speechmaking seems to have been lost. One of the victims of the television age I guess. Its now all about gazing into the camera as per Nick Clegg, which can be very successful of course in its own way. However at conference a barnstormer tablethumper of a speech would be a good rallying call...if anyone could do it anymore.

Also another big point working against a good speech at a conference, is the incessant almost nervous need of the delegates to applaud after every 12 words. What you really need is the leader to be able to get out a paragraph at least before those tiresome obligatory claps. all those interuptions make the bloody thing appear to go on forever, so the sudience at home wilts.

There were some good funny moments, but that incident with David and the war, which wasnt spotted during live transmission but came to light later was very telling.
