According to the television news, the Chief Executive of Kent County Council has been awarded an8% pay increase, taking his annual salary to £255,OOO.
In an article today, nationally, council workers have been offered an increase of 0.5%.
In these days when people are actually taking wage cuts to keep their jobs, is it right that the Chief Executive receives an award greater than the annual rate of inflation and has also cost the taxpayer 50 million pounds for investing in Icelandic Banks? He has in effect been rewarded for failure whereas in any other job he would have been sacked.

I have to agree here. There are far too many overpaid beaurocrats in local and national government.
Sid Pollitt
I'm told that when he got his job he didnt have a proper interview, he was a director and when the last guy left they gave him the top job. Last year we're told he got a 'bonus', a strange occurance in local government. A bonus that elected members werent told of at the time.
Maybe he is getting a big increase due to the success of KCC's trading arm. Mind you we're not told of the costs or profits of that either.
