 - i was asked earlier where this could be done locally, needs to be a safe location suitable  for young children.
 
 i could only think of the royal military canal but no doubt one or more of our members will come up with others.

 - You can hire sea kayaks at Dover Sea Sports Centre. Pretty safe in the harbour with adult supervision

 - There's always the water sports centre. My kids and myself learnt in the swimming pool, that was fairly safe.  http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/-  - membership gives you a licence for various Kent waterways, it's a general rule that there's only free access on tidal waters.

 - I remember being told many years ago of an Eskimo who used to get very cold on his fishing trips in his canoe. He bought a little paraffin stove which he lit on cold nights to keep him warm. Unfortunately one night a wave rocked the canoe and the stove fell over, setting fire to the boat.
