i was asked earlier where this could be done locally, needs to be a safe location suitable for young children.
i could only think of the royal military canal but no doubt one or more of our members will come up with others.

You can hire sea kayaks at Dover Sea Sports Centre. Pretty safe in the harbour with adult supervision

There's always the water sports centre. My kids and myself learnt in the swimming pool, that was fairly safe.
http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/ - membership gives you a licence for various Kent waterways, it's a general rule that there's only free access on tidal waters.

I remember being told many years ago of an Eskimo who used to get very cold on his fishing trips in his canoe. He bought a little paraffin stove which he lit on cold nights to keep him warm. Unfortunately one night a wave rocked the canoe and the stove fell over, setting fire to the boat. Despite his best efforts the canoe was lost, although luckily he was picked up by another boat a little while later. This proves that you cannot have your kayak and heat it.
