    Hi Tom

Kits vary in both fidelity and fit. Some manufacturers are far better than others.

Top for both fit and accuracy are the Tamiya kits, Hasegawa are also good for both and with simpler engineering. A company called Trumpeter are very mixed, they seem to have an 'A' team that produces some of the very best kits in 32 scale, their Daultless and Avenger being examples while they seem to have 'B' 'C' and 'D' teams that are second or even third rate.

Revell, who make this kit have a lot of old back catalogue that are dreadful, raised panel lines, poor shape and poorly fitting. Their 'new tool' kits though are generally excellent. The Arado 196 I built was nearly up to Tamiya standards. This JU88 is good, very good, but it is certainly built to a price hence some shortcomings but it does represent superb value and with the addition of those MDC bomb racks and bombs (yes, you identified the same ones I got...) plus seatbelts and just a little bit of extra detailing using lead wire and brass rod a very accurate model can be made. This huge model is a lot of plastic for around £30 - I spent that again on aftermarket stuff to enhance the detail. If Tamiya made a model in this scale of a JU88 it would have everything there, be a superb product, but would probably cost over £200.

As for the original 'kites' - I presume that reference is to the real aircraft (rather than a typo of kits...) yes often panels did not fit snugly. Models can be too pristine, particularly in this big scale, so some effort needs to be made to give them the used and battered look. It is easy to overdo though and an ill-fitting panel may not even be noticable 'in scale'. It is all about balance. We have to remember that the 'kites' I am trying to depict are not pampered museum pieces or restored treasures but work horses used in difficult conditions day in day out but, yet, pilots and ground crew did take pride in the appearance of their aircraft too. As I said a bit of balance is needed, if it looks right, then it is right!!!
