Co writer of one of the most memorable opening riffs ever, Jon Lord died today in his sleep. R.I.P.

Ah yes Deep Purple and Smoke on the Water. Some of them great guys from the seventies are falling away now sadly. They were from an era, a great era, where you had to play and write the music yourself...not as it is today, instant pop courtesy of easy assimilated TV shows. Star for a month or two then vanish off the radar. Even Sir Elton has said enough is enough as have many others in the music business.

That's sad. I remember seeing Deep Purple play at the Leas Cliff Hall years ago. Must have been the late sixties, they played there twice I think

The reason I chose that live clip was because it opened with Jon Lord showing what he could do on a keyboard. It is easy to dismiss Deep Purple as a "heavy metal" group but then it does deny credit to their musicianship. Their 1969 album, Concerto for group and orchestra (composed by Jon Lord) showed their ambition to be taken seriously as musicians.

It is worth noting that for the last 15 years or so another of the founding members, Richie Blackmore, has been performing with Candice Night in a folk based group.
