Santa's Lament
O deary, deary, deary me
the loading's gone awry
it's as wrong as it could be
and here's the reason why
Last off is first onto the sleigh
I was sure that all here knew
the hour or two I was away
all sense was slanted askew
For now I am at my wits' end
with no time to start again
alas the gift I did not send
was to this daft elf a brain
I cant conceive of neat solution
employing either brain or brawn
it's not that Z to A is confusion
I cannot fight against the dawn
Will anyone notice the mistake
might I put all my trust in luck
will all enjoy for Christmas' sake
[Do I really have that much pluck?]
Would it matter, a hair drier
instead of a train. A nice tie
instead of a deep-fat fryer
a pudding instead of a pie
With most this might just do
for some there'd be confusion
the gift could be taken in-lieu
laughter and tears in profusion
Oh heck! I'll have to give it a go
it'll be fine at the foot of the bed
after I've battled against the snow
I'll go home and bury my head
It's the thought that counts
loving and giving is all
and sharing in large amounts
So, have yourselves a ball. (or a scarf, a new hat or a book...sorry about that. Better luck next year)
Merry Christmas one and all.
