A Victory for Ugly Food
Following her campaign for ugly food to be stocked on supermarket shelves rather than ploughed back into fields, Laura Sandys MP today welcomed the news that Sainsbury's has relaxed its rules on the aesthetic appearance of fresh fruit and vegetables on sale in its stores.
Laura said: "With one of the wettest years on record causing damage to harvests, Sainsbury's have taken the bold and responsible decision to sell fruit and vegetables that once would have been seen as too ugly to grace our supermarket trolleys. Around 40% of fresh produce is rejected for being misshapen or the 'wrong' colour and so today's announcement marks a huge victory for all those who have campaigned against food waste.
"Waitrose and Morrisons are reportedly set to follow in Sainsburys' footsteps and so let's hope we have spurred a revolution across UK supermarkets. At a time when many families are struggling to afford to put food on the table, and global consumption is rocketing, it's time the supermarkets recognised that consumers care very little about whether cucumbers are bent, potatoes are knobbly or apples are perfectly round. Food must be valued on the basis of nutritional value, not whether it is fit for the cat-walk."
