we are all aware of the spate of metal thefts going around, church roofs getting stripped of lead and plaques in crematoriums or outside buildings going walkabout.
i read today that there was a robbery on the taxidermist section of a natural history museum in tring of rhino horn which is renowned for having certain qualities.
due to the high value the museum had subsituted fake horns after other places had been robbed.
shocking stuff, we can only hope that anyone found guilty receives a stiff sentence.

These metal, mainly lead, thefts are getting very close to home and thousands of pounds worth taken, will take a huge amount of money to replace.
A very large church in E.Kent, robbed twice, a small village hall (not much lead taken but will cost £300 to replace the lead) in the last 2 weeks.
I believe if lead is treated with 'smart-water' it can be insured ?? I wonder how that will enable the thieves to be convicted, if the lead is taken out of county ??
Everyone should be extremely vigilant. After an accident in our village some months ago, thieves took the broken and bent metal sign away very quickly !!

Good point Howard, they have lead and rhino horns, next will be the theft of writing implements.

I was very tempted once. I had the use of a building that was soon to be demolished. In it was one of those Victorian mahogany glass fronted indicators that summoned butlers to a particular room. I lusted after it thinking that it would grace my hallway. I resisted however.
Later, walking my dog through the ruins I spied it smashed to pieces amongst the rubble.
What a waste.

i see on the front page that a couple of people have had their collars felt over metal thefts, vigilant locals informing the police.

Funnily enough our St George's flag was also nicked from the front of our building one night, complete with pole and mountings. Quite a feat as it was 16ft above the ground. They even took the screws and rawlplugs.

Some years ago we cleared out the shed in our garden in Eythorne. One item we didn't need was our daughter's bicycle as she had left home by then. As it needed lots of money spent to make it roadworthy she said just take it to the tip. I couldn't be fagged to do that so we left it outside the front of the house in the hope that someone local would pinch it and put it to some use. It sat there for months.
One Sunday we came back from Canterbury and it was gone. We were just contemplating opening a celebratory bottle when there was a knock on the door. It was our neighbour. He said:"while you were out some of those scrotes from Elvington tried to nick that bike. I chased them down the road, had words with them, managed to get it back and I've left it by your shed."

I wonder how many others he put off prior to that.
I always leave items on or by the drive entrance and they always go, the fastest being a fire surround which went in less than 5 minutes.

On another occasion someone dumped an old WC in the garden at the Yew Tree. I was going to take it to the tip but a customer advised us to plant a few bits of greenery in it and leave it outside the front in the hope that it would be nicked. It never was and it now stands proudly outside our house.

We had a most interesting talk on the conservation work of the Aspinall Foundation yesterday. To help reduce hunting for rhino horns, a kind of thick 'paint' is applied to the horn, which includes something which penetrates the horn and, if consumed in a medicine, will produce bad stomach upsets. Won't stop the hunting but would deter perhaps.
Metal thefts have been rife in our locality, and are under more investigation - the metal in many cases would only have been worth about £5, but take much more money to replace.
