At the last election, like a good little boy, I took my Voting Card with me. As I held the card out to aid in the finding of my name on the list I was asked to state my name, even though it was printed in bold type upon the card. I thought then that this may be the thin end of some wedge.
On the other hand the calls for the advancement of voter participation in local referenda etc. will also require some sort of tie-in between voting 'right' and ID.Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing. - 10 July 2012 08:22182111Voter fraud is a very real and increasing problem with the main cause being postal voting. Showing id at a polling station will not address that.

For some reason a postal ballot form for me was sent to my parent's house in Deal, as well as a polling card for me in Dover, having just moved here. Obviously I didn't take advantage, but I wonder how many other people this could have happened to?
- 11 July 2012 07:33182276Receiving two ballot forms does not entitle you to vote twice, doing so would be electoral fraud. 15 years ago voter registration was done only in September. When you registered in Dover your parents did not de-register you from the family home. It is an easy mistake to make and quite common specially if that change takes place around the date for registration.
Incidentally, the card itself does not convey the right to vote, you do not need a card to vote as you just have to be on the electoral register and if you go to the polling station you can give your name and address and they can look you up, check you have not voted, and cross you off when they give you a ballot paper.
I do believe that for local elections, if resident in two locations in different council areas, you can vote twice, but not for national or European elections of course. - Alec Sheldon

12 July 2012 23:05182616I voted twice in, I think, 1974 but not intentionally. My father had always voted for me with a proxy vote as I had always been away deep sea since 1952. I had been in Dover a couple of years and my landlady in Victoria Park must have put me on the Electoral Roll. I was going up to Manchester on leave from the ferries on an Election day and called in my local polling station on my way to the railway station and voted.
I got up to Manchester where my father told me that he had voted for me with my proxy vote.
I don't think it would have made much difference in the results.
