David - a Europhile has no chance of being selected as a Conservative parliamentary candidate these days and as the old placeholders die out or retire the parliamentary party moves further and further to an anti-EU position. The Party's MPs today are more anti-EU than ever and an overall majority at the next election will form the most anti-EU government we have ever had. Cameron even as leader and even if he was really pro-EU could not hold back the pressure for a far more robust stand on Europe. We are inevitably moving towards a situation where EU membership, at least in its current form, has to end. The big question is whether any new relationship can be such that it will be able to keep us as members in some way or other. I doubt it and any new arrangement will effectively leave us outside the central EU core.
