In Dover from 1942.
- 21 September 2016 04:45318145I came into this world in the year 1942 and been in Dover all that time apart from the time I was in the army and working away. I have seen some good times in the town and some bad times ,and sorry to say at this time life could be a lot better ,we must have back the police walking,the streets both day and night in twos 24/7 ,and Dover has lost that war time community and fellowship,and we have lost that identity of characters we once had.
It will be very hard to get it back ,but what would help is a very good local paper again not the kind we have today that do not even have a office in the town ,and all they do is see what story come to them or what comes up on a local forum we do not have any reporters going round like we did years ago.Dover is now a place just to shop and then back home.
You can stop anyone in the streets who like my self have lived here for many years,and aske them what they think of Dover now,and 95% will tell you they do not like the town anymore and shop at Deal or other towns if they can.
Guest 1385 likes this - 21 September 2016 10:13318162My parents & Grandparents have told me lots about Dover back in the 60s & 70s ,The town was clean bustling ,people were happy and strangers would stop and chat and pass the time of day with each other ,a huge variety of shops for all ages ,I have seen lots of photographs of Dover back then and it did look so lovely ,Last Sunday morn i walked from the Town hall down to the market sq and the street was dirty dingy countless boarded up shops ,smashed windows ,2 pools of vomit lots of takeaway wrappers ,the poor homeless huddled up in empty shop door ways ,some drunks sprawled out on benches obviously from the night before & 5 dollops of dogs poo.Whats gone wrong ?

- 21 September 2016 10:25318166Most town centres are struggling, out of town retail parks started the slide now we have people buying stuff online then complaining that shops close down.
With local papers they will soon be free sheets and get their revenue from advertising that will be charged on the basis of the numbers reading their internet site. - 21 September 2016 14:09318183Was in Folkestone earlier ,then drove into Deal to see a m8 ,what a contrast those towns are compared to Dover .Deal town council has certainly made the main high street welcoming ,wonder if their council would swap with ours
