Dover District Council Purchases Nine New Homes for Shared Ownership and Affordable Housing
Dover District Council has purchased nine brand new homes in Capel-le-Ferne as part of its plans to increase its affordable housing stock. Three houses have been made available for shared ownership, the first time the Council has entered this sort of arrangement to help first time buyers get on to the housing ladder. The remaining six houses are being made available for affordable rent to families on the Council’s waiting list.
The shared ownership homes have two bedrooms, along with fitted carpets, kitchens with integrated appliances, and underfloor central heating. Prospective owners can view the properties through Jenkinson Estates.
The affordable housing offers three bedrooms and feature fitted kitchens and central heating. All nine homes have two parking spaces at the rear of the properties.
Cllr Sue Chandler, DDC’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “Buying these properties is a cost effective way for the Council to deliver much needed new affordable homes, both for those looking to take a first step on the property ladder, and to increase our housing stock. We look forward to welcoming the first tenants to their new homes in the coming weeks.”
The purchase of the properties in Capel-le-Ferne has been funded through DDC’s Housing Initiatives Reserve, and retained Right-to-Buy receipts.

Dover District Council Acts On Gas Safety Records
Following serious concerns over a backlog in Landlord Gas Safety Records, Dover District Council has taken quick and positive action to ensure tenant safety now and for the future.
The Council took swift action when informed of this issue and asked EKH to spare no expense in securing additional contractors to complete the safety checks, and to provide us with a daily update on progress.
This morning, Dover District Council Cabinet agreed to request a further report on the wider issues of housing management, and to carry out a consultation with Council tenants on withdrawal from East Kent Housing, including the option of bringing the housing management function back within the Council’s direct control.
Cllr Sue Chandler, DDC Cabinet Member for Housing said: “We have a responsibility to make sure tenants are safe and the process of gas certification is an important part of that. The Council needs to consider the wider concerns, but it is important that while this current review takes place there is continuity in housing management, and any changes we may make are done in a sensible and proper way.”
It is emphasised that the lack of a gas safety certificate does not imply that the gas appliances are faulty or unsafe in any way. It does mean that they have not been checked for gas safety as required by law.
The Council is reassured that the gas certificates are expected to be up to date by the end of this week.
For more information, please see the reports to Cabinet today.

Not just interesting, Sue. Hopefully it implies action which has been urgently needed for sometime. DDC might like to emulate their Tory bosses by genuflecting before the great god of privatisation but you cannot privatise society in its entirety. Look at that serial incompetent Grayling and the probation service for another example.
