I think the simple answer is we live in a global society, particularly when it comes to jobs. The UN could help by getting its members to agree a common framework regarding visa restrictions etc., which might have the benefit of stopping the Aussies exporting their youth around the globe whilst preventing folks from entering Australia unless they meet strict criteria (only kidding really).
As for the East Europeans, they are part of the EU and there are rules governing movement of labour; it's not their fault the EU is being run by a bunch of failed politicos who have carved a mouth-wateringly overpaid job for themselves at our expense.
We also must remember that despite the global map not being as red as it once was, we had the largest Empire, and all our colonial friends were given the right to come here by our ancestors. So, we now pay the price of our greatness. Strange though, everyone hates the British (and in Britain, the English) but they all want to come and live/work here. Go figure.
As for Alexander's post, I think he is in great danger of becoming a Little Englander and needs to step back and consider his position with regard other peoples.
