Yes, it was the realisation yesterday that I had put on weight. Those that know me will confirm that I am usually casually dressed, at least since my "retirement". However it was necessary yesterday to be somewhat formal. Sadly it took three pairs of trousers (yes I do posses three) before I found some that more or less fitted. Equally, those that know me will be aware that for the past couple of years at least that I have been becoming less and less mobile. My knees and latterly my hands have become quite painful.
After being wrongly diagnosed early on I now find that that I have psoriatic arthritis. Now as to whether the weight increase is due to less exercise or the steroids that I am now on is debatable. However I can state the steroids are having a remarkable effect on my mobility. I now feel ten years younger.
Why the hunt for a decent pair of trousers you ask? It's because I was helping out, as I usually do at such occasions, at the St George's Day ceremony. Given the fact that I was engaged in activities in the messier parts of the town hall and getting my best suit trousers snagged on the flint wall and smeared with bird droppings you may wonder why I didn't wear my usual jeans.
The reason is that I did it out of RESPECT (a previous correspondent's accusational capitalisation not mine, and I don't like being shouted at) for the fallen. I did it for them. I certainly wouldn't do it for, as Robin Day once put it "Some here today, gone tomorrow politician".

Good Luck with it Terry.
I have the same problem (putting on weight), mostly round the middle and it is a struggle. Burning off more calories than you eat is the only answer.

Terry as a fellow arthritis sufferer (not as fancy as yours

) I am so pleased for you that the steroids are working. There is no need to go on a diet do what I have done for years as I expanded treat yourself to a pair of trousers one size larger.
ps. I never mean to shout I 'emphasise' with capital letters.

Oh Tom, you are awful, but I like you!
Jan, I was told years ago that I had "mild" osteoarthritis and was given painkillers. After complaining I was sent to a physio who told me to get more exercise.
Late last year I complained again and was sent to ICATS. A nice lady there referred me to a rheumatologist. Brilliant!

It always makes me laugh when I hear the phrase from a medic "take more exercise" when it is painful to move joints especially in a leg or ankle.

Yes Jan, the first physio I saw told me this. Twice a day go to the foot of the stairs, take five steps up and down and repeat five times. When I told him that I live in a four storey house with my office on the top floor and the previous day I had counted that I went up and down 3 flights of stairs 27 times he said well do it anyway it will help!

Terry, swimming is great exercise, less strain on your joints too. Maybe you'll shrink in the wash....

Lesley, I have a psychological distrust of water, I nearly drowned when I was about 5 and can only manage a paddle!

You have my sympathy Terry, like you I am full of arthritis. I have had a new left knee and hip. The new hip was a great success but the knee not so great, after four years it is like a ballon but not giving me any pain. I now need the right knee doing but don't want the aggro. that I had with the left one so my doctor gave me a steroid injection a couple of weeks ago which didn't help at all.
My fingers and thumbs have gone on me know and give me quite a lot of pain. I cut my grass the other day and cut down a hedge but I didn't half feel it the next day. My missus makes me laugh when I struggle to get a lid off a jar or open a tin, she says "I don't know how old people go on opening these" , I am 79 and she is 74 this year.

I can understand your fears Terry. Another option could be Yoga, not many men take part so you could be a lone man in a room full of leotard clad women, that should work up a sweat if nothing else!

I know what you mean Alec, there were times when I could only pick up a knife and fork using my thumb and little finger.
Lesley, if I sat sat cross legged on the floor I'd never be able to get up!!!
