Ah yes Arnold Bocklin thats the one. I did have a copy of it pinned to the wall one time. Although I feel sure this picture and there were several versions of it, was supposed to represent the isle off Venice, although its clearly a work of 'artistic license'.
For those who delight in all things gloomy, I recommend Rachmaninov's version of same, which he composed after being inspired by the painting...also called Isle of the Dead. Fabulous piece of music, goes hand in hand with the all enveloping vision of the painting itself. Both go together very well particular for those who want to enjoy a sombre reflective half hour or so.
