around town a few people are saying we all hope that pfizer will change thier mind and save all the jobs , but if not a popular choice wouls be a hospital with the good parking space and flat area for helicopter to land
in the near future there is a lot of car parking for possible park and ride to open golf for pfizer to get some money in the bank

the hospital is set in stone at buckland, the hopes are for many smaller companies moving into the pfizer site re-employing redundant staff.
an american company has been in talks with many of the present staff and may employ some in the states.
So often an opportunity drops out of a disaster. I wouldn't devalue the immense distress caused by the closure of Pfizers, but for some it will be the prompt needed to do something new. Stuff happens like that sometimes.

A hospital on the Pfizers site sounds wonderfull but closeness of QEQM would make that out of the Question.
Let us hope that the powers that be don't miss any opportunity.

The Task Force will be presenting its 30 day report to Vince Cable/ David Willetts on Tuesday. No doubt it will be published online after that date or after a press conference.
The point to make on this posting is that Pfizer will not be here after 2012. There is no reprieve/second thoughts.

That is speedy work, PaulW. Good luck with the presentation.

I do think that the Dover District are doing the very best that can be done over this one,it is a very big site, which I have worked on alot over the years. They have a very big incinerateor unit there and that Could be used by councils and Hospitals and I put that to the EastKent NHS trust some time ago this could save the NHS many £1000s .Mr Watkins please think about that to.

paul
it was clear from the first announcement that pfizer would be going, what is important now is to get the best use out of the site.
i am not so sure about the science park idea as there is one up at sittingbourne, if it does come off and small firms move in and re-employ ex pfizer people that would be best, but i cannot help but think that staff are already looking at other job opportunities at home or abroad.

Exactly Howard but some are already in talks directly with Pfizer to use elements if the site & facilities.
Venture capitalists & specialist pharma & bio scientific entrepreneurs are advising staff on how to take processes forward.
Until these talks have been exhausted the scope & size of the site availability is unclear.
It is against this back drop & the opportunity to talk government directly about incentives that reports & plans are being formulated.
An economic assessment of the impact on East Kent has been commissioned adding potential public services losses to complete the picture.

all sounds rather grim paul, i read the other day that george at no.11 is considering bring back enterprise zones in his budget.
if east kent is not in need of a kick start then nowhere is, trouble being that it will be assumed that the area is rolling in money because it is in the south east.

Yes indeed young George has been talking about the return of Enterprise Zones. I havent seen his speech but when I heard about his initiative I immediately thought of the Pfizer site. Its almost tailor made and the timing could be just right.
Mr Cameron is talking of our enterpreneurs today as our only hope for growth...give them a chance here in East Kent by creating an enterprise zone, and in/on the Pfizer site.

I'll keep you in touch with the general direction of travel but there are many commercially sensitive areas which can't discussed.
Next two meetings for the Task Force next Tuesday 8th & 22d March. at Department of Business, Innovation & Science.

What is sad and Paul and I agree on this is the media are saying it is 2600 jobs well that is true but over 2000 more are employed on the site as contract workers. The best will be creamed off and sent North to another Pfizers site while the general workers will be left.
That is why action is needed and I am glad the task force is trying thier best,My Dad was a security Guard there when there was just the main building and a few bits behind it,he had to watch the money being counted every day and one of the Accounts Clerks was Roger Day now of Radio Kent.My Grandad worked in despatch for many years, and I used to play for Pfizers under 16 football team, our shirts were Red but someone washed them in too high a temprature and they turned Pink, you can imagine we had our legs pulled over that!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

any group of companies moving in would be very unlikely to share their incinerator facility.

The incinerator they have there is a very good one,I did help fit it in, years ago,and there is a big use for it still ,The last thing we need to see is it closed down it could make alot of cash and jobs for this area. The police and others have used it alot in the pass and might still do today.
