just a pipe dream, the likelihood of dover having a fully functional hospital was scuppered when the emergency services said their contingency plans in the event of something nasty happening in the channel meant that margate, ashford and canterbury provided the support they needed.

You're right Howard, but it was scuppered more by the fact that it has been determined that 2 hospitals can cope with 500,000 and we have 3, plus Buckland for around 600,000.
With new thoughts of "help at home" and investments in "social care", it is thought that the demand for intermediate care-beds, is reduced.

Roger, how will that tally with KCC cutting social care?

I understand that the CCG (Care Commissioning Group) are working with KCC, but don't know far they've got, Lesley.

kcc are cutting the social care budget but this is not necessarily a bad thing.
i remember one of their top councillors explaining how they would get around the coalition cuts and he made good sense - basically there would be more people staying in their own homes rather than going to care homes, with regular visits from care staff.
surely that is better than being shunted off to a strange place full up with zimmer frsmes and being force fed cabbage?

Howard, much as I agree with you that it is better to stay in your own home there are cases when that is not an option. We then have the problem of finding a suitable care home and with KCC cutting back ( i.e. Sampson Court) affordable options are stretching peoples budgets.
I have seen both sides of the care system and although the CCG is better than nothing it still leaves a lot to be desired. How horrified we have been to see the reports of neglect and abuse reported at care homes and hospitals in the news and this gives rise to the question, are the right people making a career out of caring?
Currently we are being told that lack of care of the elderly is costing the NHS millions and that we should be addressing the issue of preventative treatments. Which brings us back to the point, where are the hospital beds for those that need treatment?

Possibly blocked by those that years ago would have gone into a Convalescence Home for that intermediate care prior to going back to their own home or into a care home.
