I was in Dover High street for the first time in over 5 years today.
Things have changed for the worse i feel.
All a bit depressing. The Charlton Centre - what's that all about?

Funnily enough those that saw you said much the same thing, a lot can go wrong in five years.
Seriously though. It is evident from what is reported here that Dover is by no means immune to the depredations common to town centres all around the country. This is just one of the down-sides to an 'ever' buoyant property market. When much money can be made/raised by merely owning property without the nuisance of letting it this is what happens.

Quite a timely comparison. Maybe it's about time I walked the Town again.
Dover doesn't have an organisation supporting or moving it forward either.
On the other thread about regenerating Dover, I said I had written to DTC, DDC and DHB about the Mary Portas review and all had replied in a positive way.
Subsequent to that, I received a reply from Sue Jones (Town and District Councillor) advising that a meeting had been set for February 23rd. where a number of local business people had been invited to discuss the merits of the application and how it can be progressed.
This is being TC led, but hopefully with input from the DC and where required, DHB too.
I do hope this can get off the ground and result in a successful application, which if Dover wins, will mean around £80,000 coming to Dover for improvements.
Not a great amount I agree, so what do you think it could/should be spent on to give maximum benefit to Dover ?
Interesting and useful suggestions, I'll take to the meeting.

Most Towns have someone leading the Town foward Keith - Dover doesn't, nor it seems, does Weymouth.

Paul Watkins is the Leader of Dover District Council.
The Mayor is the Leader of Dover Town Council.
There isn't anyone leading the Town.

ashford doesn't need any help, getting back to the charlton centre it seems to be ever changing.
it doesn't help when the unit at the front is empty, gives the impression that nothing is inside.

Rents are too high is the general feedback I get regarding Charlton Centre. It was nice to see the cafe fairly busy when I walked through yesterday.

That IS bad form Howard. Perhaps here again the 'big-picture' is lost to penny-pinching and a lack of understanding as to fairness.
I think it to be in the very blood of all high street retailers to pay special attention to the front window display.

Does anyone know if there are any stipulations on what the money should be used for? As Roger says £80,000 will not do a lot in terms of tarting the town up but it could pay several years salary for a town centre manager (Roger

) type role which could have a longer lasting effect.

You know by the many postings I have made about DCoC Keith, that that is a non-starter, why bring them up ?
I'm going to delve into the various links and application criteria and see if I can determine any criteria.
Many of the initiatives I have in my tourism strategy could be spent by that money to create a much more successful Dover.
