All this talk of Maggie closing the pits is somewhat ridiculous really. Under any government today, be it Labour, liverlillied or conservative, the pits would eventually close anyway because of the targets dictated by the climate change act. Same closures just different reasons for their closure.
Go back to the eighties and imagine the coal strike started as a result of mass closures due to saving the planet. How much support would there be from the left if that were the reason? The left is up to their chins in greenwash and the climate cult which is one of their top priorities in terms of manifesto pledges. I suspect those who marched to save the pits would find themselves marching to close them regardless of the impact on the mining communities built up over generations. Surely any self respecting left winger today cannot possibly justify the remaining pits to carry on operating. To do so puts into question not only their logic but their sanity to boot.
Edit:
Of course this applies to those of any political persuasion.
