There are still lots of households have free range chickens, I used to (over 9 years fox took two in daytime in garden, but never got into the very strong chicken house).
There are several in our village, including neighbours, who have a few free range in their garden and chickens are very friendly creatures - they like to visit your kitchen if they can.
Our old cockerel Henry waiting for us to get home, on the gate... Henry spent his last days in the Alkham Valley keeping 40 hens in order!
