Today we got a form back from our daughters school requesting, among other things, her ethnic background. At one time these forms confined themselves to country of origin but not anymore. This form lists 14 different types of 'White'; White, White-English, White-Irish, White-Scottish, White-Welsh, White+any other Asian background, White and any other group, White and Black African, White and Black Caribbean, White and Indian, White and Pakistani, White Eastern European, White Western European and (in case you are a Cornish Nationlist) Other White British.. By way of comparison there are only 4 types of Black given (Black African, Black Caribbean, Black and any other ethnic group and Any Other Black background). Are we alone in finding this obsession pointless to the point of absurd?
