  Having worked with families suffering extreme poverty, I found that the root cause of many of their problems stemmed from bad experiences within the education system. Either poor quality teaching methods which did little to inspire them or, sadly, parents who themselves had underachieved and could not offer support to their children. By working with adult education, schools and youth clubs I am proud to say that I did start to make progress with some wonderful people who had underestimated their own abilities.
  I am not saying that everyone could, or would, want to break out of the benefits system but more do than do not.
