09:3292951I heard a small item in passing this morning..flowing forth from BBC's flagship Radio 4..so I dont have full details but it seems that our Lords are calling for less advertising on satellite television.
This is a good move and I wish them success in their efforts to get the amount of ad time reduced. There are just too many ad breaks on satellite TV and to my mind this is counteractive to the reason for advertising in the first place. People mentally swithch off, as they are simply too bombarded with crap advertsing like Confused.com or that Underdog thing. Try to catch an old Poirot and there are breaks every ten minutes destroying the programme completely. While trying to watch Murder on the Orient Express the other night, having missed it at christmas, one had to endure an assault course of mindnumbing banality every ten minutes.
Because the companies involved dont sell enough advertising they repeat the same ones over and over. Its murder and not even on the Orient Express!
The satellite channels can legally carry up to 12 minutes per hour whereas terrestrial can only use 7 minutes. Although in my bones I feel that more than 12 minutes is being shoved in our gobs constantly by satellite TV for the simple reason that they can get away with it.
So at last someone is now highlighting this abuse of airways power.

10:5892962the interminable advertising is intensely irritating but i doubt that anything can be done.
people choose to subscribe to a private operater.

16:0593000I personally am speaking about Freeview Howard as I dont have a Sky package or anything of that nature. But somehow the Freeview viewer doesnt merit or doesnt rate on the richter scale of care...the operators know they have a captive audience, getting stuff for nothing, so as a consequence pulverise them inhumanely with the most rubbish TV imagineable and an incessant flow of bad advertising run as often as possible with scant care for regulation.
Some standards should be enforced.
Once upon a time, but it seems long ago now, we used to talk in terms of British TV being the best in the world...not now alas. So many bad stations on freeview existing on continual repeats of bad stuff that probably shouldnt have seen airtime in the first place...one is baffled as to why these channels exist at all.

16:2993010I always watch ITV drama on Virgin catchup because they cut out the adverts, the programmes are nearly always just over 45 minutes long but have a 1 hour TV slot. Nearly 15 minutes of ads in some form or another.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

19:0993039I now record everything I want to watch on the digital, and then you can speed through all the ads and not sit through them.
I just can't stand to have to see them, it spoils all the programmes.

11:0693130Kath that sounds a good solution, but as it is i cant record digital TV. I still have an older tape recorder thing. If anyone can let me know what make or sort of device I need to record digital tv please let me know. I havent an idea as there is a bewildering selction of allsorts of stuff out there.
But it shows to what lengths we are prepared to go to avoid the adverts...simply because there are too many breaks and too many incursions on digital tv where regulation is vague.

You still require a colour licence as you can access other channels in colour on line via your pc...but I am sure you knew that...

12:3193145Paul, I think you can get a freeview box that records, it must be like the Virgin+ box my daughter has, I know she can record on hers.
