Hollywood success...
- 18 January 2011 08:3089358I have been reading about Ricky Gervais presenting the Golden Globe awards.
Apparently he went down a storm, well not really, he got them rather upset , to say the least.
He talked about them being the most important people in the world (dangerous saying that to people who do not quite understand irony... but in this case apparently they did understand it). He had a dig at plastic surgery (brilliant timing because the camera was on Merryl Streep at the time and the director had to quickly switch to a long range shot). He had digs at closet homosexuals and scientology (now just what famous star was he referring to?). Everone knows who his joke about adopting third world babies was about....
And in that theme the evening went on.
Sound like great TV to me, Ricky turning a boring award show into something worth watching.
The Hollywood media apparently up in arms and what this 'nasty man' was saying about the luvvies....apparently they wont let him work in Hollywood again.
Well having previously been somewhat neutral about Gervais this has turned me into a fan. It is time someone told the denezins of Tinseltown the truth about themselves, pricking their overblown egos, political correctness and self-importance.
Well done Ricky Gervais....
- 18 January 2011 08:5989359I will probably sound a bit fuddy duddy but here goes: Gervais sitcoms have been very funny, but his stand-up has not, he just tries to offend and the effort isn't worth the pay off. I end up not offended but not amused either. And I think it is probably bad manners to take the money and hospitality to present a ceremony that the people attending take seriously and then blow gas in their faces. Their lack of humour is funny enough and does not bear the heavy-handed irony that gervais thinks is amusing. His mis-judgements, poor timing and childish attempts to offend cloaked in the guise of "pushing the envelope" fall flat for me. So: Gervais, go write some more sitcoms and zip it.
Sorry to disagree BarryW!!! - 18 January 2011 09:2089361Yes I think Bern is right here...although what Gervais said had an element of the watchable shock factor to it, the whole shhhpiel wasnt particularly funny. It got an embarassing laugh or two and it had a watchable element but the last thing people want at their annual awards ceremony, whether it is the BP or Apple annual dinner, is someone to come along and insult the people there, the people in the business.
The newspapers today take a mixed view of it all...some liked it some thought it appalling. One said the comments were just snide...and so therefore not particularly good comedy writing as almost everyone can do snide!
One thing.. I guess it was Tom Cruise he was referring to re the gay Scientologist..well I didnt know that.This information made me take note with bewilderment. But... If Tom isnt then gay then dear old Ricky can expect a lawsuit. Shocking waste though innit..to be married to Nicole Kidman if you dont really fancy her

There were complaints then too, equally controversial, but they still invited him back. The result, a massive boost in the all important ratings for this year.
I have just watched U-Tube of his 2010 hosting and it was simply brilliantly funny.

Note the thousands of 'likes' and what, only 94 dislikes - so his knockers above are in the minority. - 18 January 2011 09:5789370Ah yes I saw him in action on the show last year and his stuff was lighter and funnier. He made a couple of mild shocks last year if my memory serves me well, but got away with it as the jokes were generally chirpy cheeky chappy stuff. This year he decided in advance that he was going to go for the jugular...much heavier material... not everyone's idea of a fun night.
One prominent guy spoke up for him on Sky News... an aged Al Pacino...dear old Al looked like he'd had a few, must have been filmed soon after the dinner!!

- 18 January 2011 15:1889400I agree with Bern, Gervais was perfect in a sitcom in the past, but personally I can't take to him, I cannot see the attraction. I got fed up with seeing him on what seemed nearly every other Jonathan Ross tv programme and feel as a stand-up he doesen't work, his humour I find a bit 'cringe worthy' to say the least.
I hope he takes on american citizenship and stays over there, maybe as PaulB says they thought that he would have been more 'cheeky chappie' (aka 'cockerney' Dick van Dyke Cor luverly Guvn'r, Gawd Bless 'er) which they seem to like, but then again I like Bovril - Keith Sansum1
