I`m informed a number of HMV music shops are closing across the UK. One Christmas tradition for a few years I`d forgotten about, was to go to the store in Canterbury on Boxing Day for the sales. Used to come out with a number of cd`s and saved a fortune. On the other hand, it was a shame to have paid £9.99 for one during the year, only to find it down to a fiver or less at years end. I suspect the internet and possibly Ebay have taken much of their trade away? Always one of my favourite stores, I did at times travel up to Oxford Street in London and spend many an hour or two wandering about on my own.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

I was in the Canterbury one today. Looks like they have problems with the roof, buckets scattered around in stategic places.

I heard a rumour about that too. A few of them seemed to have joined forces with Waterstone's books. I guess downloading songs has been the death of places like HMV. Like you Colin I used to spend ages and a fortune in the Oxford Street branch back in the day.
That was always a classic pub quiz question - what was the name of the HMV dog.

Was in HMV just before Christmas to get a couple of DVD's as presents for the kids and was encouraged to get their 'purehmv' card and buy on-line with them rather than in the shop.
However they must still be planning on staying open as there is a part of the site that you can register your purchases from receipts to collect your points.
Virgin will be pleased!
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

I bought loads of CDs from them for Christmas presents, all online. Much more choice and no hassle finding a parking space in Canterbury.

going back to buddy's post it must be galling for staff to be forced to encourage shoppers to buy online.
seen it in other shops, just cuts down the time before they are made redundant.
i refuse to use the self service tills in supermarkets for the same reason.

Waterstones in Thanet at Westwood Cross. Quite a large store (much bigger than Folkestone)

#5. Jeane, they had a great number of jingle CDs up in Oxford Street, but the price of £17.99 was too much as they wouldn`t play a sample track before I bought one. There were many pirate radio jingles as well as BBC testcard music pieces that I wanted but many that I didn`t, so couldn`t take a chance in spending out on so many discs. This was back in the 90s. Today, I can hear most of them on Youtube.
