  The conclusion I came to is that the submarine Truculent did not have lights indicating its own position, and was not seen by the Swedish tanker.
  
  By all rights, when the captain and others on the submarine's deck saw the strange lights of an approaching vessel on their path (the tanker), they should have alerted this vessel's attention using horns or lights from the sub, so that both vessles could determine each other's presence, reduce speed, and make the right maneuver.
