What is particularly gutting about the whole sorry affair is that the cycle race was organised to raise healthcare facilities for injured service men, obviously mainly returnees from Iraq and Afghanistan. They are currently raising money for a new swimming pool and other healthcare facilities at Headley Court rehabilitation centre.

After a spectacular landing the cyclists walked around with their charity collection boxes looking in vain for donations. With somewhere around 200 people watching the event the cyclists would have received absolutely paltry sums towards their cause; I doubt if Dover donated a hundred pounds that night. They should have raised four figures here.

What a dreadful image Dover authorities projected that night to the charity, the MOD and to our own populace. Given the almost total lack of official support at the event by those who us tax-payers fork out for, it was almost embarrassing to be a Dovorian.
