I see that the Home Sec is calling for secret papers on the disaster to be released early. Perhaps I'm thick but I wonder why given that it was such an appalling disaster that details should be kept away from the public gaze. Once again there seems to be a cover up culture where 30 years on those responsible will either be dead and buried or too old to prosecute.
Someone somewhere made a fatally wrong decision and they have got away with it.

There is a point to protecting the innocent, but there is no point in covering up accountabilities. That way leads to mistrust and fear. I have always supported the slow release of sensitive information if it is in order to protect people if needed, but that is irrelevant if the people being protected are being protected because they are Establishment and not because they are vulnerable or abused.

96 people went to a football match and never went home again that day, I know if I was a parent and it were one of my family I would want to know Why. The truth has been held back for 20 long years and if releasing the papers on this disaster will help the families of the 96 with the truth then they should be released, just as they should have been by now anyway.
It matters not that that this was football, it was a disaster that should never ever have happened, a lot of people perished and a lot more were injured, a good number of them young people. Decisions were made that day that resulted in this tragedy and the truth should come out about the decisions made and who made them. The families of the 96 and those injured are owed justice, they deserve the truth they should have had years ago and certainly not in 10 years time.

I dont know the full story on this but of course remember the full horrors of the event, and as it unfolded too live on TV. I think though to be fair, the police have already held their hands up saying that they made a grave error in that they opened an extra gate to clear the street and the lane of crowded fans. It was a temporary relief though as the crowds milled in to an already overcrowded terrace and the result was this terrible disaster. This action clearly led to the disaster. Not sure where the cover up bit comes in to play.
They showed the police action on TV last week. It was nearsighted action but they didnt know what was about to unfold.

The cover up bit comes in Paul because the papers have been hidden away quite literally.
My main question is WHY? If it were anarchists attacking a secret defence establishment then there would be a reason. The whole process of keeping documents secret 30 or even more years in some cases needs to be looked at.
In cases like Hillsborough everything needs to be open and clear.

there were stories at the time of people trying to climb fences to escape to safety onto the pitch but being pushed back by police.
this is something that needs to be thoroughly investigated.
