01:5134390Seems to be the way of the times, I miss singing in Maxton at 'The Hare and Hounds' which was an early casualty of this downturn.
RIP many good watering holes out there..
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

08:3534393I remember that it was always Peter Rees' last stop on the eve of an election day for a drink at the end of a campaign. It became a tradition for him.

14:1734395Very sad to hear that.
Meanwhile I noticed the White Horse was closed last night, again.
I wanted to go in there for a celebratory drink and to record my superhuman swimming exploits on the walls (15 lengths in the adjacent pool - the big pool at that).

16:0234398Which pub are we talking about here...is it the High and Dry up there on the road to Sandwich?? Is that the one?
Andrew very sad re The White Horse... its dead but it wont lie down. Rumour mill says it was about to be sold but then the new clients pulled out. Sadly its become a bit dilapidated now and needs a lot of money spent on it to make it a going concern. Sad you couldnt have a drink after 15 lengths of the BIG pool.

18:4534401Its a shame about The White Horse, a nice pub with an interesting history, always enjoyed Jack & Jill's company, but sometimes it got a bit clicky if you know what I mean. I passed by walking the dog around 4.30pm this evening, outside lights off, bar lights on, curtains drawn. Is it unofficially closed, it would be nice to know either way

19:0734403Clicky? I know exactly what you mean Barry, and that hasn`t helped the pubs either. Some regulars seemed to think it was their `local`, no outsiders. I`m pleased to say I don`t find the forum that way, even though I don`t know any of you. Nice to find a wide variety of views on everything. Long may it continue.

20:5234412Colin - come to the forum "do"! I have never been but I hope, barring emergencies, to go this time and meet the rather scrumptious people with whom I have been corresponding.

08:2634429That's a shame about the High and Dry; Jean and I used to go in there regularly a while ago; it was (then) a Landlady who ran it but her husband died and shortly afterwards, she sold it and the various people who took it over just kept increasing the price of the food (and drink) without improving the quality of the food, which deteriorated after that Landlady left.
Too many pubs/pub-restaurants put up the prices of their food and price themselves out of the market.
The owner of the White Horse is now a very rich man owing to his parents leaving him loads and seems to play at running it now.
Five minutes away from there is Blakes in Castle Street - a great cellar bar and lunchtime food and for the duration of this year, there will be real ales, ciders and wines (1.75 ml glass) - all from £1.95. each that is, not all three !

14:1834456The High & Dry has nosedived in recent times in terms of quality, ambience and price. I'm not surprised it's closing, people vote with their feet - it used to be packed in there just for the food (especially Sunday lunchtimes), now it's empty most of the time. Says something.......
I like Blakes (as per Roger's post) and The Park Inn which seems quite vibrant these days. I've only been in The White Horse on two occasions, and on each occasion it was like walking into a saloon in one of those old Western movies: the place fell silent, every pair of eyes turned on me and the piano player stopped playing. I ordered a quick shot of red eye and moseyed on out of town.
True friends stab you in the front.
