Hidden Gem

  Whilst exploring around the Rendezvous Street area of Folkestone town, I stumbled across a traditional pub today which I hadn't visited before, what a find! Just behind the Bayle steps I found 'The British Lion', great food with ample proportions of locally sourced food
  
  I had a large bowl of home-made beef & tomato soup with bread, spicy zesty chicken wings and cheesy chips, lubricated with a pint of Old Speckled Hen I believe the pub is the oldest in the Folkestone area which dates back to 1460, ales on offer were Abbott ale with guest beers Old Speckled Hen and Timothy Taylor's Landlord.
  
  Has anyone else come across this inn or some other 'Hidden Treasures' which need our hospitality

  know it well from when i do the "where is it" photos barry, lovely area i think the guildhall pub is close by.
  
  there is a small secluded garden not far away with a pond, a great place to read the sunday papers there..

  I've been in the British Lion, not for a while though. Very nice pub from what I rermember but as you say rather hidden out of the way. Good to know it's still there

  Jean and I took my brother and his wife to the British Lion last night and it is indeed a lovely pub - great food and very reasonable prices. A very warm welcome and even though we hadn't booked, we were found a table (the very last one) in the "Dicken's Room".
  
  My brother and his wife had fish and chips and what a whale of a portion that was, so very good value; Jean had pate and I had scampi. Oddly no home-made pies, but great food.
  
  Good choice of beers/ales too.
  
  It is a lovely spot; we thought we might visit the Guildhall pub next time, which also looks good.

  Having grown up in Folkstone, I remember The British Lion very well, always been a well used Pub and glad to hear it is still there, as said hidden away but has a regular group of people who use it so hence the fact that it is still there.
